The Rebuilding of the city of Jakarta, Indonesia

Everything can be found in the city of Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city.  From the the sprawling city to the country side, the city has changed a great deal throughout the years, and while at one time many tourists did not find this a pleasant location to visit, is now becoming one of the more popular spots in Indonesia.  As with any large city there has been the good mixed with the not so good.  The political unrest of the city’s recent city and the crime rate has done to this city what the same elements did to the South African city of Cape Town.

In the next few years both cities are going to show the world that it is now safe to visit, to shop, to attend music festivals and grand scale sporting events, with many new construction sites for fine dining and luxury hotels.  Indonesia has a very mixed population, as is exemplified in the city of Jakarta.  Wandering the older sections of the city, one will grasp a feel for the history that brought the many different cultures together.  With immigrants from all around the country, the way of Indonesian life is shown here in this one place.  As with other cities however, the natural disasters and the bombings of hotels, and the Australian Embassy bombing in 2004 created a sense of fear, and the flooding that has happened over the last five years had created a city of homeless people.

The city has embarked on a promotional plan so to speak, looking to increase their rate of tourism by more than half over the next few years.  Local festivals and celebrations such as the Dragon Boat Festival, bring many to experience the color, and the sounds, and the sights of this city that is trying to make its way back.  When the tourism does begin to grow, the city will be able to rebuild and the people of the country will find economic security and peace of mind.
