Training on Demand

Education has been a hot button topic for generations. How much “book learning” do kids need and when should it start has been debated for centuries. Other debates have focused on defining appropriate subjects, figuring out who is qualified to teach, and, most importantly, how to pay for the schools, teachers, and other resources needed.

Anyone who has turned on a television in the past few years has no doubt seen advertising for online universities as well as specific online programs from more established colleges. When Harvard and MIT started offering online classes it was considered a seminal moment in education history . People are entering the workforce with degrees that were earned entirely online — and that’s not longer automatically considered to be a worthless degree.

Thanks to the development of cloud computing technologies, education and other forms of training are now being adapted to fit the computer-centric lifestyles of today’s students and employees. In addition to university degree programs and certification programs, there are on-demand training modules available for use within companies. there are also numerous business training courses that are available to the public as continuing education or career development options. Computer-based training through the internet is here to stay.

Finding a Home in California

November 18th, 2010 >> Real Estate

As the real estate market begins to slowly rebound, it’s still a good time to be house hunting in most parts of the country. While foreclosed properties can be appealing, there’s still a risk associated with short sales and people trying to buy a home in southern California especially will want to watch out for those properties.

Anyone looking for a La Jolla CA house will find a range of available properties. Most will be on the luxurious side, as this upscale community takes full advantage of it’s coastal location and the proximity to San Diego makes it even more attractive. However, there will be affordable options for most price ranges, it may just take a bit of digging.

The temptation will be high to attempt to find a house using internet listings and by scouring real estate ads. Buyers would do better to pick a qualified real estate company or agent than going the “do it yourself” route. Realtors are usually privy to listings before they are published online which gives clients a head start on prime properties. In addition, a licensed real estate agent is going to know more about the neighborhoods, developments, and terms of a given property than can be discerned in a simple listing.

The Basics of Pool Maintenance

November 14th, 2010 >> Home

If you’ve moved into a home with a pool or just had a pool installed in your yard, you’ll need to start maintaining it right away. If you want it to stay all sparkly and clean, you have to take responsibility for keeping it that way. Pools are subject to algae and bacteria, so it’s important to stick to a regular schedule of cleaning and maintenance to ensure a healthy water environment for your family and friends.

You’ll want to quickly master the basics of pool chemicals . Determining the proper pH level for your pool will depend on its size. You can purchase testing supplies at local pool shops and should test the chemical balance on a regular schedule. That way you can adjust the chlorine levels as needed. You’ll also want to keep a watch out for physical signs of algae or reports of burning or red eyes by swimmers as that indicates an imbalance. If there is a lot of stormy weather or an increase in pool use, you’ll want to test the levels more frequently.

Other than chemicals, the pool will need to be cleared of debris on a weekly basis. This means skimming the water for leaves and such and scrubbing the sides and bottom of the pool too. Dallas pool companies can tell you the schedule for running your pool pump and cleaning and replacing filters and screens. Make sure you get that information from them before they finish the project.

Planning a Budget Wedding

November 8th, 2010 >> Weddings

In spite of the rampant extravagance touted by the ever-expanding wedding industry , it is still possible to have a simple, tasteful wedding without breaking the bank. In the wake of the credit crisis of 2008 and with the country fighting two separate wars, it’s not surprising that more and more people are choosing to have simple weddings with family and friends rather than opting to go into debt to create a “wedding event.”

The first step in reigning in wedding costs is limiting the guest list. This is vital, as larger groups require not just larger venues, but more decorations, more food, and more of just about everything — from bridesmaids to programs to rice. Keeping the list small and intimate allows the happy couple to choose smaller venues that may be more meaningful, such as chapels, gardens, and private homes.

The next major step is to resolve to make it a DIY wedding wherever possible. While this needn’t mean that the bride and groom do everything themselves, it does mean allowing various family and friends to donate time, sweat, and even items to the festivities. A home cooked rehearsal dinner_ or even a family potluck reception are good options. Using flowers from grandma’s awarding winning rose garden or having a niece with an artistic bent create unique decorations are other options in this category.

Lastly, committing to reuse for clothing will save a bundle. The men can still rent their tuxes and the bride can hunt for a used wedding dress in thrift stores or the closets of family members. Even the bridesmaid gowns can come from thrift stores or second-hand wedding stores.

Why Websited Need Testing

November 2nd, 2010 >> Internet

No one puts up a website without having a specific purpose. Most personal sites are designed simply to allow the owner to express their opinions and share experiences and knowledge with the web. However, there are countless new sites being brought online every day that hope to generate revenue in some way or another. For these sites it is vital to conduct Usability Testing before going live and whenever significant changes or upgrades are planned.

The reason is quite simple. It is easy to set goals for a site in terms of sales and leads, but site owners and developers are oftentimes much too close to the design process to be able to accurately predict whether the site will meet those goals. User testing puts the working site in front of webizens and evaluates how well the site works. Effective testing will not simply gather opinions from evaluation surveys. It will require testers to complete a preset series of actions on the site and monitor how well the site responds. This will include evaluating the navigation, site structure, and the steps involved in completely specific actions, such as ordering items or submitting lead information.

Any flaws in the design are revealed by this testing, which gives developers the chance to fix them before the site goes live. The analysis will also provide the users’ emotional response, which is critical in building brand reputation and loyalty as well as ensuring repeat visits and purchases. Site owners who use these findings are much more likely to launch a successful, and profitable, site than those who skip the testing process.

Safety is Paramount at Amusement Parks

The best theme park experience is going to be the result not just of careful planning and attitude, but also of countless hours of safety precautions. While theme parks themselves do most of the work to ensure guest safety , it’s up to every visitor to do their part as well.

Parks spend thousands of dollars and hours ensuring that their rides, food, and overall environment is safe for guest enjoyment. The reason that there isn’t a Disney World accident in the news every day is that parks constantly inspect their rides and vehicles and provide extensive safety training to both maintenance crews and ride attendants.

It is not enough, however, to rely on the parks to keep a family safe. Each individual needs to do what they can to ensure their own safety. They accomplish this first and foremost by following every safety guideline provided by the park, no matter how silly or inconvenient it may seem. This includes not going on rides with certain health conditions and obeying “keep out” signs in areas that seem to be harmless. Visitors also have the responsibility to protect themselves from sun and heat injuries , and to guard against exhaustion and other conditions that could put not only themselves, but those around them at risk.

It is the partnership of park and guest each doing their best that ensures that the overwhelming percentage of park visitors have a safe and entertaining experience.

Buying an Affordable Safe

Families who want a bit more security than an alarm system can offer would be wise to consider investing in a safe. This way they can feel secure that if a thief manages to get past the alarm, they will be thwarted in their attempt to abscond with the family valuables . Since most burglars operate on the “get in, get out” model, anything that slows them down is a plus.

The only problem with this plan is that safes can be expensive, especially those that are rated for fire protection as well as burglary . One way to find a more affordable safe is to look into the growing market of used safes As with most other products, the internet has created a ready made forum for the sale of used safes that didn’t exist before.

Another option families can consider to save money is to purchase the smallest possible safe and the lowest rating that fits their needs. While it might not be a perfect long-term solution, it can still take care of their immediate needs to secure their possessions.

The Social Bookmarking Phenomenon

Posted by: admin

October 19th, 2010 >> Internet

Almost as long as there’s been a worldwide web, people have been trying to find the best way to save their favorite sites and pages so that they can return to them again and again — and they’ve also wanted to find ways to share URL s with co-workers, peers, friends, and family. As social creatures, humans like to connect and passing on a funny, insightful, or even sad story, video, or blog post is a great way to connect.

The rise of social bookmarking is directly attributable to these factors. Bookmark sites allow users to collect all their web favorites in one place and access it from any device with a connection to the net. Very few people only encounter one computer in their daily life. They have favorites stored on computers and laptops at home, work, and school and more and more are using their smart phones to surf the web and find favorites that way. A good bookmark site is easily accessible from all places.

The social part of the phenomenon comes from the ability to share these bookmarks with the world. By tagging each bookmark with the a keyword or phrase identifying the subject matter, users create a massive database of links that are easily searched by general categories as well as tags. Web surfing is a bit easier when you can start with a group of links on a given subject that have already been vetted by the members of a bookmark site. Most sites have rating or voting features so that users can rank the quality of the site and these rankings help others decide if it’s worth clicking the link.

While social networking sites offer the ability to share links between “friends” and even the general public, depending on privacy settings, only social bookmark sites are designed to organize and store links for easy access in the future.

Medical Insurance for US Visitors

Posted by: admin

October 16th, 2010 >> Health

While Americans bemoan the state of health insurance in this country, they don’t stop to think that it might also be difficult for foreign travelers to obtain us visitor insurance when they come to the States. While it’s easy enough to get visitor medical insurance to travel in Europe, Canada, and other countries, it’s a bit harder for American travel.

Health insurance is also an issue for immigrants and non-immigrant workers in the United States. They may have more options than the leisure traveler, but it can be expensive. Given the rising healthcare costs in general, it’s not surprising that temporary insurance for foreign nationals is radically higher in America than it is for the same travelers visiting other countries.

Anyone purchasing visitor health policies should consider carefully any existing conditions that might flare up under the stress of travel as well as the overall health environment of their destination. When traveling to more expensive locations, try to purchase the minimum coverage that might be needed, but don’t skimp on things like medical evacuation or emergency treatment if the travel will include recreational activities or extreme sports. Most people never use their policies, but it’s better to have them, just in case.

S.A.F.E. Goes Into Effect

October 13th, 2010 >> Real Estate

On October 1st, the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008, commonly known as the S.A.F.E. Act , went into effect. This law requires several federal agencies to work together develop and maintain a federal registry of mortgage loan originators. This includes individual employees of any institution that is agency-regulated and engages in residential loan origination. This act was a result of the real estate crash of 2008 that rippled through the economy and resulted in foreclosures, bank failures, and a nation-wide recession.

Individual brokers and loan officers are required to register with the national database and keep their registration in good standing. This registration is not tied to a specific employer, although employers have specific requirements as well. Employers must require all their mortgage originators be registered and adopt and enforce policies and procedures to assure compliance. States have the option to setup their own registry and requirements. An example of requirements is the 8 hours of Illinois mortgage continuing education required annually for licensing in that state.

SAFE defines loan originators as those who assit borrows to apply for or obtain mortgage loans, those who negotiation residential mortgage loan terms, and those who take applications for residential mortgage loans. Employees who complete administrative and clerical tasks associated with loan origination but are not directly involved in assisting the client or negotiating terms are not considered loan originators.
