PM visits hospital to see ailing Surjeet

Noida, May 18: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday visited the Metro Hospital here to see Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet who doctors say is in critical condition.

The 92-year-old veteran politician was admitted to the hospital a week ago with severe respiratory problems.

According to hospital sources, Manmohan Singh spent about 15 minutes talking to doctors and family members of Surjeet.

Hospital director Purushottam Lal briefed him about Surjeet's condition and the medical treatment.

A senior doctor told IANS that Surjeet's condition was "critical but stable". He added: 'We expect his condition to improve.'

Surjeet, a former general secretary of the party, had been virtually confined to his Teen Murti Lane residence in New Delhi for over a year due to ill health.
