Cars and moves seem to go together as naturally as tires and wheels . A lot of that has to do with the fact that many movies represent real life and cars are an important part of daily life in much of the world. However, there are plenty of movies that feature cars as more than just background objects or scene settings. In some cases, the cars are secondary or even primary characters in film.
A classic example is the Volkswagon bug known as Herbie. From the original The Love Bug released in 1968 to the 2005 reboot, Herbie Fully Loaded, there have been over half a dozen films, tv shows and tv movies featuring the character. Other popular car characters include Chitty from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Lightening McQueen from the animated classic Cars and the newer Cars 2.
Whether they are sporting nankang tires , racing stripes, or are futuristic flying time machines, cars are an essential part of filmlore. Here are a few statistics:
Over 16,000 movies feature autos, over 100 of those are animated films.
Cars have appeared in over 600 documentaries, and 1700 television series.
Over 50,000 cars have been used in car chases by major characters.
Nearly 100 cars appear only in the trailer for a film and not in the actual movie
An average of 16 cars appear in any given movie.
