The Museum of the USCGC Taney in Baltimore, Maryland

The city of Baltimore is filled with museums, and due to the shipping industry, and the ship building industry that has supported this city for hundreds of years, many of those museums are located on, you guessed it…ships.  One such museum is located on the USCGC Taney, a ship that was originally built in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1930.  The end of this vessels career came in 1986, after fifty plus years of continued services.  Her last missions took place during the years between 1977 through 1986, when she carried out search and rescue missions as well as patrolling the waters of the Caribbean for drug runners, as well as training missions for the United States Coast Guard.  The largest drug bust in American history happened in 1985, when the crew of the Taney seized one hundred and sixty tons of marijuana.  Just one year following the ship was decommissioned in Virginia and donated to Baltimore in order to serve as a memorial to the maritime history and as a museum.

Many people choose a lunch time adventure at a Baltimore restaurant before heading out to the museum of the Taney and what better way to experience the ship, her historical duties and the city itself than to have some steamed crabs, and then head to the docks where those crabs are unloaded.  The Taney was first ported off the Hawaiian island of Honolulu.  Until the years of WWII the crew took her out in search of opium runners and on various search and rescue missions.  Often times the ship was used to run food and supplies to the American colonies living on the Line Islands.  Once the war started, the ship was fitted with guns and sonar equipment in order to locate enemy submarines.  The Taney fired at the attacking Japanese planes on the day of the Pearl Harbor attack, and when the bombing subsided, took to patrolling the ocean waters for submarines.  The crews and the ship have had many years, many stories, and what may not be covered in the tour of the museum, you will definitely sense just by standing on the decks of this incredible vessel.

London’s Foodie Paradise

Last July, my boyfriend and I, when we were visiting London, bought tickets to the ‘Taste of London’, it’s a temporary foodie heavenly event held in Regent’s Park; if featured some of the best London restaurants, selling miniature portions of their signature dishes. We couldn’t wait to go, but the ‘Face of Ascot’ competition forced us to change our plans, so instead of heading to Regent’s Park from our London hotel to eat food and drink bubbly, we headed to the Royal Ascot, thankfully it was worth the trip.

Even though the Royal Ascot was worth the trip, that didn’t stop us from salivating about the ‘Taste of London’. Fortunately, we managed to exchange our tickets to Sunday! So, the next day, we headed to the park around noon and met up with a couple we had made friends with during our trip. We surveyed the scene, which turned out to be huge. The white tents, which were stretched out endlessly, emanated amazing smells for hot chocolate, to grilled meat, to roasted vegetables. There was bottomless champagne, cheese plates, Pimm’s and Lemonade, canapes, and too many wine tasting stalls.

We sat down on this very cushy sofa so we could take a respite and enjoy the perks of spending half our vacation money on this affair. Refreshed and ready for more food, we went back into the midst of excellent food. We tasted sea trout with cucumber and braised wild rabbit with bacon and fennel. We then sampled some broad-bean soup and chilled pea with prosciutto wrapped bread-sticks. At the next stall, we were served honey-drizzled courgette flowers loaded with Chevre. Our taste-buds have never been treated to such fantastic delights! Then right next to that stall, we were served French fries with some fantastic salt that they called ‘crazy salt’, we went crazy over the salt.

We left the ‘Taste of London’ five hours later. There were many restaurant booths that we just hadn’t had the chance to visit. Our taste-buds were so over stimulated and wanting more, but our stomachs were telling us to not even try one more bite. We decided that next year, we’ll have to attend both days!

Saving Money with a Wood Insert

The fireplaces of my childhood were mostly brick affairs, large, with folding wire mesh grates and the hearth mostly black and white with different types of ash scattered around the remains of the wood fuel.  I remember late nights, watching the fire burn down to embers, the logs glowing red, slowly turning into a crumbly white.  It worked well to keep costs low for heating during the winter; not only was it a source of heat, but we used it to bring the family together, even toasting marshmallows over it.  These days, though, with energy costs so high, it’s obvious that the same fire place wouldn’t heat a two story house so well.  It needed help, and a wood insert was exactly the answer to help cut down the utility costs today.  Here’s a way to use your fireplace to really help the financial toll that energy takes, especially, if you’re like us, and your children are all out of the home:

First, keep the heat upstairs around fifty five or sixty degrees and simply keep the wood insert fed throughout the day.  Hard wood is good for the night, making sure it will last until morning.  If you’re older, you’re going to love the heat this puts out; it’ll make your bones feel good; I find heat like this can be great for aches and pains, especially from arthritis, in the joints.  It’s plain, old ordinary heat that works so well.  If a chilly wind is blowing outdoors, then simply back up to this fireplace.  It’s going to feel good.

Second, fill the insert up when you get up in the morning.  The fire from last night will have died down, and it’s now time to get the house really warm again.  Keep all necessary items downstairs; that way you only have to go upstairs during the warmest part of the day, in the afternoon.  The fire will keep the downstairs rooms nice and cozy, whether it’s a den or bedroom.  In our home, we mostly live downstairs this way.

Third, if you do this, you’ll not only like the heat, but the bill will be really low.  Last winter, we saved about a hundred and fifty a month, this way, compared to the year before — all from wood heat and from using a wood insert.  If you can do this, it’ll definitely save money!

Breaking Rhythm Records in Singapore

Singapore has more to offer travelers now than ever before.  This extremely cosmopolitan city state has a rich local culture that draws on Malay, Indian, Chinese, Thai, and Japanese cultures, and it’s evident in the architecture, art, and certainly in the food.  Because of its high population of Indian residents, there are some truly fantastic Indian restaurants in Singapore.  One of the finest ways to spend an evening, in fact, is to taste some of the delicacies in town, and then prepare to check out the local culture.  It may take awhile, however, to get over the amazing taste sensations, because the sensibility toward cuisine is very highly developed here, and in the Indian community, there is a fantastic sense for combining traditions of cooking with innovations in a marvelous way.

There is always something grand going on in town, every night of the year, and it’s always difficult to make a choice for what’s the best event.  The truth is, there is probably no wrong choices, as each performance or gallery opening or concert has something elegant to offer any traveler.  You’ll also be meeting some of the locals, who will undoubtedly have some excellent recommendations of their own.  If you have an ear for Carnatic music, however, you’re certainly in luck, as there is a great deal of interest in Indian music here.  There are also splendid teachers, and among these is T.R. Sundaresan.  He teaches the art of the mridangam in Singapore, and helps students to master this complex percussive art.

The instrument itself is like a clay drum, and in fact, the earlier versions of it were made of clay, and it’s played on the floor.  Finger strokes play complex mathematical patterns, and the sound is stunning.  It’s a very difficult instrument, too, and takes a lot of endurance, but this did not hinder Sunderesan from breaking the world record for non-stop playing recently, when he played for over 42 hours.  You might not see that while you’re in town, but you’ll hear splendid sounds nonetheless.

Touring Gettysburg

A great number of people know the following about Gettysburg, Pennsylvania: It’s the site where the 16th President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln, gave his famous Gettysburg Address. And most people will even be able to tell you the first few words of the speech, “Four score and seven years ago,” although less will be able to tell you that means “87 years ago,” even less will be able to follow up with the rest of that sentence: “Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”  Unless you live in the area, you won’t know the story of Gettysburg itself, but if you were to travel to Pennsylvania State and book yourself into one of the hotels Gettysburg offers to its visitors, then you may learn a great deal more.

Gettysburg is to be found in the south of the state, and easily reached by Harrisburg, Baltimore, Carlisle and Washington D.C..  In fact, it’s only a little over two hours drive from Philadelphia, and so there’s little excuse not to miss this historic site.  Here, you’ll find The Gettysburg Battlefield.  If you’re a Civil War buff, this is a must-see destination, the spot where the war turned in 1863, where the North, under the command of General George G. Meade, successfully conquered General Robert E. Lee’s army.  It was a bloody three day battle, leaving behind over 46,000 dead or dying men.  Every Fourth of July, there’s a three day reenactment of the battle that preserved the Union.

The town was founded in 1786 and bears the name of a tavern owner, Samuel Gettys.  In 1859, the Gettysburg Railroad Station opened after a line was built to Hanover; while service of this famous railway stopped in 1942, today the station operates as a museum.  In addition to the battlefield, the town has over a hundred restored buildings of the time period, plus double-decker tours, as well as ghost tours, which take people to various “haunted” locations.  A terrific place to visit!

Portugal Capital

Find a room at one of the best hotels Lisboa Portugal has to offer. This is a great capital city of Portugal and is the wealthiest city in the Iberian Peninsula. It has great financial, economical and political importance in this country. Like many other old world cities this has a long list of cohabitants that have come and gone over the years. The Roman Empire ruled this city from 205 BC but this town was already a thousand years old. Julius Caesar spent time here and then the Germanic tribes ruled the area in the fifth century until it was taken by the Moors in the eight century. In 1147 the Christians came as the Crusaders under the leader ship of Afonso Henriques. This is when the city took a major hold has the capital of Portugal.

There are some historical sites to see like the Castle of Saint George. Visitors will have to travel up the hill over the city to get a walk across the bridge into this sixth century castle. It was inhabited by a number of royal families. The Romans, the Visigoths and the Moors all housed their royalty here over the many years. The first King was of course Afonso Henriques. The castle was named after the saint of England by the Anglo-Portuguese pact of 1371. It did have it’s battle with natures earthquakes where it collapsed but was rebuilt.

Visitors come to this oasis and spend peaceful times enjoying the history. There are statues of the King and of course cannons and wear showing the early history of the place. There is an exhibit call the Olissiponia which is a great multimedia exhibit. This is a great way to learn about the history of the city. There is even a simulator of the earthquakes and the tidal waves that have hit this city. Visitors find there way up to the Tower of Ulysses to see the Camara Escura which projects the images of other notable sites that are located around the city.

Design and Job Opportunities Found at Next Day Blinds

When the members of a company, the staff-the management team-the owners-the investors, when they all come together for one purpose, for one goal…you get a company like Next Day Blinds.  Reviews about not only finding good examples of great customer service in the companies of today, but those reviews amongst my friends, regarding just not being successful in finding companies that are actually great to work for…well these are just are not something that Next Day Blinds even has to consider.

After spending one single, and one very fine, day in the city of San Francisco at the age of sixteen, it took about twenty-five years for me to actually take that leap.  My first apartment there, was quaint, and very charming, but was to put it bluntly…a bit worse for the wear.  I set about my re-decorating and my repairs.  Well, planning to renovate takes as much organization as running a company, and through suggestions of friends, I learned that part of my problems would be solved by finding the new “theme”…or the style in which I wanted to transform my flat.  I thought about walls, about paint and wallpaper.  I thought about redoing the wood floors and tiling the bathroom.  And of course I thought about the windows.

I had two floors of windows to cover and I didn’t know where exactly to begin.  So, remembering the suggestions, I headed off to Next Day Blinds Timonium store.  Reviews mentioned earlier by my friends, I now had the solutions for.  Not only did I receive the best of customer service experiences, the staff was knowledgeable and design oriented.  I know many artists, needing day jobs during this state of the economy, and the creative vibe at Next Day Blind was so palpable you could feel it in the air.  Not only did I find the perfect shades and blinds for my flat, but a friend of mine now works there as well.  What a great welcome back to a beautiful city.

Wood, gas, or pellet fireplace?

Wood, gas, or pellet?  Which is best for the fireplace in your home?  Homes in America were almost exclusively heated by either coal or wood.  These days it’s pretty rare to find a home heated just by one of these two fuels.  While wood stoves harken to a more rustic time and gas stoves speak to our desire for instantaneous results, a pellet fireplace may speak to our need to be efficient.

Without power, though, it seems as if there’s nothing better than wood burning in a fireplace.  It’s a flickering, dancing heat that’s been with humankind for at least four hundred thousand years.  It’s provided us with food and warmth for many millennia.  It’s no wonder we find it reassuring.  However, wood stoves require trees.  You may need as as 1/2 to two cords of dry wood.  Maintenance for a wood stove, too, is important and requires removing annually creosote that may build up during the course of a winter.

Gas fireplaces, on the other hand, are far more convenient.  Flip a switch.  You have fire.  You don’t require a wood box or the mess that may go with building a fire.  No clean up, either.  The cost of natural gas might be a concern, especially if it continues to rise.  They don’t even require chimneys.  If you’re looking to retrofit your fireplace, then gas might be the way to go…

But there’s also the pellet fireplace to continue.  What’s the main attraction here?  In this case, it’s their amazing efficiency.  Introduced in the 1980s, pellet stoves and fireplaces have a combustion rate of nearly 100 per cent.  And they can burn corn pellets as an alternate to wood pellets.  Like the gas fireplace, they’re cleaner than the wood variety, although they’re a little more complicated than their fireplace cousins.  Usually, they work exceedingly well, but they must be maintained and cleaned regularly.  You’ll need to be sure to read all the instructions that come with them in order to adjust the stove to get the best burn rate.  A possible drawback is that a pellet stove does need electricity to move the pellets into the burner.  If you don’t have a battery system in place, then the pellet stove might not work in an outage, even then batteries may not last longer than a  full day.

With some research of the different manufacturers, you’re more likely to find the best choice to heat your house.
