Walking in Manhattan, all of Manhattan

Exiting the airport gave me my first taste of what New York will be like. I got in the line to catch a big yellow taxi, which only took 15 minutes, and gave the driver the name of one of the Manhattan business hotels where I will be staying. My company put me up there for free! It was my bonus for doing a great job. The drive to my hotel gave me a nice glimpse of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler building. The New York skyline is instantaneously recognisable. I even got to cross the Brooklyn Bridge. I was amazed just how familiar everything looks, all because of tons of movies I’ve watched over the years concerning New York City. My excitement about being in New York over-rode my jet-lag.

My hotel was unique and centrally located. My accommodations were exactly what I was hoping for, warm, comfortable and private. Even though my body was aching for me to get some rest, my mind said that I needed to at least walk around the area of the hotel a bit, just to get a small taste of the city before my body collapses. I didn’t even bother to unpack, I just headed out the hotel and casually took a walk around the block. I really liked the fact that it was not far from a great pizza place. Tauted as the best pizza in the world, and me being a pizza critic, I have to agree. I couldn’t resist getting a slice and I ate the generous slice while I walked a little bit more.

After I crashed, in my hotel room, I just had to force myself back awake, fighting my jet-lag all the way because I just needed to do some more walking about. I walked from my hotel to Central Park. That took more than an hour, but that way I got to really get the feel for the city. I spent the entire day and well into the evening just walking about. I loved everything about New York. Everything. The energy here is tangible and catching. My jet-lag disappeared at every step I took, every site I saw, at every smell. Tomorrow, I’ll stop walking and ride the subway. That should fill up an entire day and night!
