Blowing My Mind in Rajasthan

There really isn’t much to do in Jaipur. So, I decided to visit the Amber Fort during the day and then see a Bollywood movie at night. Amber Fort is only 15 minutes away if you take a bus. The Fort is very impressive, but it is under renovations, so I didn’t get any good photos. So, needless to say, Amber Fort was a bit of a let down.

That evening I went to a genuine Indian cinema and wow! It was an experience and a half. I really recommend anyone visiting India to at least see one Bollywood film, if you don’t you really are missing out on an aspect of Indian life. I decided to see Vivah, which the register clerk at one of the Rajasthan luxury hotels where I was staying recommended. Vivah, a like all the movie posters for this film indicate, tells you it’s a story about the journey from engagement to marriage. I realize that it doesn’t sound like much of a story plot, and that it doesn’t include sex, violence or any explosions, like most Hollywood films do, but this movie was the best entertaining films I’ve ever seen. Really! Let me put it another way, if the random musical interludes and the melodrama aren’t enough for you, then watching the how the audience participates during the entire length of the film will.

I’ll start from the time I arrived at the cinema house. I splurged for a balcony seat. An usher directed me up a jade-green spiral staircase and once at the top another usher opened a door to what seemed like a private lounge. It was decorated 50′s chic and the room was kidney shaped with wrap around velveteen couches. There was a concession stand that served not only popcorn, but pokaras and samosas. I had a hot Chai while I smoked! So, see?  If the movie doesn’t wow you the theatre balcony will blow your mind away!
