The Rebuilding of the city of Jakarta, Indonesia

October 27th, 2009 >> Travel

Everything can be found in the city of Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city.  From the the sprawling city to the country side, the city has changed a great deal throughout the years, and while at one time many tourists did not find this a pleasant location to visit, is now becoming one of the more popular spots in Indonesia.  As with any large city there has been the good mixed with the not so good.  The political unrest of the city’s recent city and the crime rate has done to this city what the same elements did to the South African city of Cape Town.

In the next few years both cities are going to show the world that it is now safe to visit, to shop, to attend music festivals and grand scale sporting events, with many new construction sites for fine dining and luxury hotels.  Indonesia has a very mixed population, as is exemplified in the city of Jakarta.  Wandering the older sections of the city, one will grasp a feel for the history that brought the many different cultures together.  With immigrants from all around the country, the way of Indonesian life is shown here in this one place.  As with other cities however, the natural disasters and the bombings of hotels, and the Australian Embassy bombing in 2004 created a sense of fear, and the flooding that has happened over the last five years had created a city of homeless people.

The city has embarked on a promotional plan so to speak, looking to increase their rate of tourism by more than half over the next few years.  Local festivals and celebrations such as the Dragon Boat Festival, bring many to experience the color, and the sounds, and the sights of this city that is trying to make its way back.  When the tourism does begin to grow, the city will be able to rebuild and the people of the country will find economic security and peace of mind.

New York’s Roseland Ballroom

New York City is one of the most visited cities in the world, and with some very good reasons.  Year after year, and generation after generation, the people who live here continue to reinvent the city, to make it something that lives up to its previous reputations, and makes room for the next generation.  The ingenuity of the artists, engineers, scientists, politicians, and laborers who spend their lives here, is what makes the city great, from one borough to the next.  There are always a thousand things to do in NYC, at any time, and almost on any given block.  But there are many times when you’re here, for business or for fun, when you need to be in a few places on any given day, and for this, we recommend New York City car hire.

This is an easy answer to your transportation needs, and for those who need to be everywhere at once, it saves time, hassle, and money.  There are many times when visitors here need to be in Manhattan in the morning to meet breakfast with a friend, do a business appointment with a co-worker in Brooklyn in the afternoon, and meet friends of family in Long Island in the evening.  When the itinerary is complicated, having your own transportation makes everything much easier.  There are so many fantastic places to see in New York, that it’s impossible to see them all, but with a car, it’s easier to try.

One of the great places in the city to see a live concert is the Roseland Ballroom.  Like everything else here, it has a complicated history, with a lot of twists and turns.  It was originally opened in Philadelphia by Louis Brecker in 1917.  The financial backer for it was the founder of Pennsylvania’s Yuengleng beer, which is still in operation as well.  It moved to Manhattan in 1919, until it was torn down in 1956 and moved to its current 52nd Street location, which is a renovated skating rink.  It has seen a number of jazz greats over the years, and today it’s got one of the best reputations in town for the bigger names in punk and alternative rock music.  Bands like Nirvana, Portishead, and the Ramones all played at the Roseland, and there also lots of celebrity events, fashion shows, and even more family-oriented fare.  It’s worth checking out!

Legendary Citizens of New York City

Many people, young and old travel to the city of New York either in search of their dreams, or following their dreams.  This is true for all aspects, searching for business careers or fashion design or music.  Those interested in live theater may find it in other cities known for their support of the performing arts, such as Seattle, Chicago or Los Angeles.  But no other American city is like Manhattan.  No other city in the world for that matter, comes close to the history and the continued draw of theater people far and wide.

Two men who did very different things affected not only the lives of those people coming to the city to find themselves, but they entered into the history of New York theater by their own means which for one of them was not necessarily connected to theater work.  One such man is honored with a sculpture in Times Square, this is George Cohan.  Of many songs he composed for over the years, he wrote “Give My Regards to Broadway”, in 1904.  The statue of him in the Duffy Square section of Times Square is the only one that honors a legend of the stage.

The other man Joe Allen created an institution when he opened his restaurant in the summer of 1965.  He built the restaurant in the theater district and so consequently his establishment became a favorite for theater people, from those in the chorus to those on the main bill.  He was known to frequently offer specials to anyone who was trying to make there way in the city, and on the stage.  The restaurant remains open today, seven days a week, for lunch and for dinner, and serves a special Sunday brunch each week.

Many establishments in the city have offered discounts to those involved in the arts, just as one of the best of New York City’s hotel, the Algonquin offered free food and discounted rates on rooms to the writers of the 1930′s did.  This is not so much the case any more, however, there are still a few places hidden here and there in the city, where the owners take care of those in their neighborhoods, and it is well worth it to find them and soak up the vibe of the people whom are following their dreams.

The Perfect Hot Tub Party

There are many benefits to taking measures to improve your health, and the first step is making the commitment to making positive changes in your life.  Since the human body actually likes the things that are healthy, the next steps are easy, because they feel good.  So it goes with choosing to have a hottub at your house.  The next step is using it, and every body likes hottubs.  There is an appeal that goes beyond the basics of health and exercise, and it’s a pleasure that never wears thin.  There is always a good feeling when you know you can take some time aside and really enjoy just relaxing, and letting the jets and the heat do all the work.

Health has never been easier, really, or more pleasurable.  There’s even more good news: It’s got a lot of social appeal, and friends and neighbors might come calling.  The social aspects of having a hot tub include the ability to entertain anytime you like.  Being around other people is also very good for health, both physical and mental.  Some of our hot tubs have extra features, like entertainment systems, and these open up the doorway for more possibilities for all kinds of gatherings.  You’ve probably started to consider some of the parties you’d like to have, like getting your friends together to watch the big game, or the last episode of the season of your favorite show.  You could also make the party centered around a meal, where your guests relax in the hot tub and you serve them a fantastic dinner, served fresh from your grill!

There are many splendid ideas for a perfect hot tub party, and you will likely enjoy all the experimenting that will go into finding your perfect party realized.  Putting some time into making a unified concept for the gathering will reap great rewards, when your carefully-selected guests start to see the effort you’ve put into it.  Consider all the things that go into any good party, like decorations, music, and games, and then when you add the hot tub, it becomes even more fun.  Of course, even a spontaneous party can be a wonderful thing, and when a dinner party turns into a gathering in the water, no one will complain as everyone starts to relax and have fun, enjoying the benefits of your hot tub.

Cuisine and Theatre of Singapore Attract Tourists

Mark and Dave decided that they would take a vacation to a place that neither had been before, but both had to be interested in. After narrowing down the choice to five different locations, they agreed they would pull two of them out of a hat and then flip a coin to decide which of them got to make the final decision based on the two choices. As it turned out, Venice, Italy and Singapore where the final choices and Dave won the coin toss was awarded the final decision on vacation locations. He gave it a little thought and was himself almost mutually attracted to both places. Finally he decided to be a good friend and he opted for Singapore, which had originally been Mark’s choice.

Fortunately for both of them, the decisions were not as complicated once they reached one of the five star hotels Singapore and they actually ended up being interested in many of the same things. They both wanted to try as much of the local cuisine as they could and they both loved Broth, which was a known as the restaurant on the hill. Dave had an incredible spinach and mushroom salad Mark ordered the daily pasta, which was linguini with a pesto based sauce. They both had the apple tart for dessert.

They also enjoyed many of the local landmarks and attractions such as the Fort Canning Park with its outdoor cinema and also the Esplanade and some of the other Marina businesses and attractions. One of the things they both intended to see from the beginning was a production of Cantonese Opera. They went to a production by the Chinese Theatre Circle, which is one of Singapore’s most active companies and were absolutely amazed with the performance. They were also taken by the detail of costume and scenery and the incredible dedication and talent of the performers. Their trip to Singapore remains one of Mark and Dave’s favorite vacations, and their system for making a final location decision remained with them as well.

Grilled Hot Dogs

October 19th, 2009 >> Food

For a cooking choice that’s healthy and stylish, outdoor kitchens are a wonderful alternative to the way we think about meals.  The taste of food on the grill is undoubtedly one of the finest, and spending more time outdoors is a good way to relax and reduce stress.  It also hearkens back to something more primal, where the idea of hot flame and fresh meat wake up an unusually potent hunger.  It’s a hunger that will be easily satisfied, too, when you start to see how easy it is to make fantastic dishes with your own grill.  Our barbecue islands have fantastic set-ups, with design and taste accompanying their remarkable engineering.

They truly are splendid in design, and there are many choices to suit your own style and budget.  Once you begin working with your grill, you’ll see how easy it is to make sensational new meals for the important people in your life.  And you might start to notice some unusual changes, where you start to daydream about different taste combinations.  Your way home from work might be filled with a new anticipation.  And who knows?  Perhaps after a couple weeks of eating nothing but grilled sirloin, roasted lamb, and salmon, you might be in the mood to try an actual hot dog on your grill.

It doesn’t get more elemental than that, and it’s often a serious pleasure to find out that those simple things still hold their weight in gold.  There are a number of splendid brands of gourmet hot dogs, but you might want to relive a summer memory with the cheapest in town.  Cooking a hot dog until it’s done is a very easy thing after you’ve mastered pork tenderloin, so there’s no worry about calculations, and certainly not marinades.  However, you might decide to put a little something extra into it while the grill is hot, and grilled onions go with nearly everything that’s basic in the world.  Or, grilling some vidalia onions to make a relish can be a delightful touch, but that might be getting a little too complex for a primal hot dog daydream.

The Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid

October 19th, 2009 >> Travel

Madrid is one of the beautiful cities in the country of Spain. It is a city rich in history and cultural significance and was particularly recognized and affected by the Spanish Civil War. Not only was it a stronghold of the Republicans for a period during 1936, but it was also the first city that was bombed during the war with the targets being regular citizens and non-military social structures. This was also the first time in the recorded history of warfare that the targeting of civilians by airplane bombings occurred.

This, however, does not define the city, nor does any other aspect of turbulent eras in history. What does define Madrid and is obvious to many of the tourists who visit it and stay in one of the five star Madrid hotels is its sense of pride, endurance and culture. There are many buildings that represent its sense of history and dynamic cultural heritage, though the Plaza de Cibeles is probably the strongest icon and symbolic representative of the city. It is located in the region of the city that is commonly referred to as the Paseo de Recoletos.

The Plaza de Cibeles is an incredible complex that is full of marble sculptures and beautiful fountains. It designed and built with a neo-classical orientation and depicts the Phrygian mythological goddess of fertility, Cybeles, sitting on a chariot with two lions pulling it. It was designed by Ventura Rodriguez in the late 18th century and was built during the reign of Charles the third. It is one of the main attractions for tourists and also the chosen location of celebration for the Real Madrid football team. They have adopted it as the appropriate place to celebrate major victories in the top competitions. The team is the most successful of all of the Spanish football teams, choosing the fountain as a place of celebration gives it an even greater significance.

Eating My Way Through Singapore

October 15th, 2009 >> Travel

Spent the day hanging around Little India and decided to get something to eat. Go figure, that’s all I’ve been doing since I arrived here in Singapore. Little India is right off the subway, it has it’s own exit. It kind of reminded me of the East Village in New York, a street lined with Indian restaurants. I chose one that had a menu posted outside and it had black daal. Black daal is my most favorite Indian dish. It was delightful, I’m going to have to learn how to make this at home. The garlic naan was fresh, right from the oven. I rounded it off with lime juice. After that meal, I was still feeling the jet-lag, so I headed back to one of the top Singapore hotels where I’m staying and get some shut-eye.

The next day, I found myself wandering around the malls of Singapore, apparently, I’m doing what most Singaporeans do too, it appears to be a national pastime. I was once again hungry, and this was a great place to find some lunch. I stopped off at the Imperial Treasure. Their noodles were fresh, I could tell as I watch the man behind the counter make them. The noodles were scrumptious in the hot and sour soup I ordered. I ordered a little bit of Dim Sum and I fell in love with the scallion pastry. I’ll have to figure out how to make that at home too.

Later, I took an excursion to Kuala Lumpur. A staff member of my hotel recommended I check out the Kor yo-Won. He knew I was a foodie and thought I’d really enjoy eating there. It was a Korean BBQ place, I scanned the menu, but couldn’t figure out what was the best thing to order, so I asked my waiter. He told me to order the traditional beef BBQ and a Korean honey and ginger tea. I couldn’t stop eating! Every bite was a culinary delight. The waiter also recommended desert, but I was so full, I couldn’t take another bite.

It was raining when I left the restaurant, but that really didn’t bother me, I was still in food heaven.

New York for our Anniversary

Posted by: admin

October 14th, 2009 >> Travel

For our anniversary we decided to go to New York City for the weekend. We have always wanted to go to New York City and this was the perfect opportunity to go. Our plan was to really treat ourselves and we did. First we booked a room in mid town Manhattan at boutique hotels New York. Charming and quaint it was just the romantic type of place we had hoped for. The hotel was rather small and intimate not at all what one expects to run into in the middle of New York city.

The location was excellent we were able to get to everything we wanted that weekend on foot. Right in the middle of Manhattan, we were near Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building. A very short walk to Times Square and the world famous Grand Central Terminal. It was amazing to be in the places I had seen many time on TV but never in real life.

From our hotel we were able to access Central Park in just a short walk. We strolled up that way one evening and took a carriage ride around the park. It was a crisp and cool evening perfect for a carriage ride around the park. Another night we took in the Broadway play Spamalot , very funny and worth going to see. Both of us having been fans of Monty Pythons Flying Circus and all the subsequent movies the Monty Python gang made we were looking forward to seeing the play. We were really glad we did it was excellent, I haven’t laughed that hard in a very long time. And once again we were able to walk from our hotel to dinner then to the play. We could not have been more pleased with the convenience of the hotels location.

The weekend was a great get away and perfect way to spend our anniversary.
